Smiths Beach Surf Lifesaving Youth & Adult Activities

The Smiths Beach “Cadet Program” was founded in 2022 and has grown in leaps and bounds since then. Individuals must be 13 or older by the 30th of September each year to be able to participate in the program.

There are four main training pathways available – Lifesaving, Training, Leadership & Surf Sports – with a focus on having fun and building your own personal skills. No experience is needed. If you’d like to hit the beach every Sunday morning during summer and keen to attend training sessions, competitions & camps in between, then this is for you!

Youth & Adult Season:

The youth & adult main training sessions generally run from 7.30am to 9.15am every Sunday from October through to March.  We also hold at least one training session at 4.30pm during the week and run a “social training” session on the beach at 5pm each Friday, followed by a BBQ and banter until sundown.

Wondering why you should join the SBSLSC Youth & Adult Program? Here are some reasons you should consider:

Self Improvement

Not only will you learn very useful skills (first aid, CPR, rescues and power craft), by being involved in the surf life saving community you are demonstrating that you are dedicated, a self-starter, a team player, a team leader, someone who is willing to learn and someone who is willing to get out of your comfort zone. These are all amazing characteristics that will benefit you personally in future employment or award interviews.

You will be placed in situations where you will need to be responsible for the safety of yourself and, above all, others. Since we expect you to act like an adult, you can expect to be treated like an adult at all times at Smiths Beach Surf Life Saving.

The SBSLSC program is generally non-competitive and you can be involved at a level you feel comfortable with, advancing at your own pace. However, for those who have a competitive streak, we attend regional, state and national competitions (water sports, land and training/leadership competitions).

Community Service

Surf life saving offers an opportunity to obtain community service hours in an enjoyable setting. Not only that, but being involved in supporting the local community opens doors and offers great personal mental benefits (there is no better escape from school or work).

Advanced Training

As you progress through the cadets program at Smiths Beach you will get the opportunity to obtain your Surf Rescue Certificate, then your Bronze Medallion and then additional skills that will set you up to become a professional life guard each summer, if that interests you. You also get an opportunity train as crew and driver for IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) and RWC (Jet-Ski). These qualifications are not only fun to do, but they are a very strong demonstration of your maturity and self-confidence. How many of your mates can crew an IRB through a 6ft wave and come out the other side unscathed?

Social

There is no better way to end the school or work week than a light (fun) training session down at the beach, followed by dinner and an in-depth discussion of who had the best wipe out this week. Our Friday sessions bring the SBSLSC cadets, adults and families together each week. We are a strong team with great role models within that team for the younger members, but we also manage to find time to have a bit of fun.

Come on down and try it out, you’ll love it!
